Living in Hartford, SD: A Local Guide
Hartford sits about 10 miles west of Sioux Falls, with a small-town main street, a strong school district and an easy drive into the city. Here is what living there looks like.
The basics
Hartford is in Minnehaha County, west of Sioux Falls along Highway 38 near I-90. The 2020 census counted 3,359 residents, and the city's 2025 parks and trails master plan puts the 2024 estimate at about 3,619, with about 3,834 projected by 2029. Hartford grew about 32% from 2010 to 2020, so it is a steady, established growth town rather than a brand-new suburb.
Schools
Hartford is home to West Central School District 49-7, which also serves Humboldt and part of the surrounding countryside. Federal data counted 1,418 students across the district's six schools in 2024-25, with Hartford Elementary, West Central Middle School and West Central High School all in town. The district's four-year graduation rate for the class of 2023 was reported at 90-94%, above the state rate of 84%. The city's parks plan also maps a future West Central middle school. Confirm the assigned schools for any address before you buy.
Commute
Most Hartford residents work out of town. The city's 2023 housing study found that about 91.5% of employed residents commute outside Hartford, mostly into Sioux Falls. Highway 38 and I-90 make the west and north sides of Sioux Falls a short drive, and downtown is usually about 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic and where you are headed.
Home styles
Hartford mixes older homes near Main Avenue with newer subdivisions on the edges of town. You will find classic ranches and split-levels, newer single-family homes with finished lower levels and attached garages, and a growing number of twin homes and townhomes. The 2023 housing study estimated Hartford will need about 58 new housing units a year through 2033 to keep up with demand, so new construction is part of the picture. I help buyers compare older homes and new builds with an engineer's eye.
Parks and lifestyle
Hartford has four city parks covering more than 92 acres and about 17.2 miles of sidewalks and trails, with Turtle Creek running through the middle of town.
- Turtle Creek Park: about 37 acres along the creek, with open space and trails.
- Swenson Sports Complex: about 40 acres of ball fields, soccer fields and pickleball.
- Lyons Park and Century Square Park: playgrounds, picnic shelters and the city's outdoor pool.
- Central Valley Golf Club: a privately run golf course right in town.
