Living in Harrisburg, SD: A Local Guide

Harrisburg is just south of Sioux Falls and has been one of the fastest-growing towns in the region for two decades. Here is what to know before you buy there.

The basics

Harrisburg is in Lincoln County, roughly 9 miles south of downtown Sioux Falls. The Harrisburg School District reports the city reached 10,297 residents in 2025, up from fewer than 1,000 at the turn of the century. Lincoln County as a whole has been the fastest-growing county in the state.

Schools

The Harrisburg School District 41-2 is one of the largest in South Dakota, with an estimated 6,370 students this fall. The district says enrollment has grown about 696% since 2001, and about two thirds of the people it serves actually live inside Sioux Falls city limits. That matters if you are shopping in south Sioux Falls: many of those addresses attend Harrisburg schools. Enrollment growth has recently leveled off, but new subdivisions keep coming. Confirm the assigned school for any address with the district.

Commute

The drive to downtown Sioux Falls is typically 14 to 18 minutes, mostly straight up Cliff Avenue (SD-115). South Sioux Falls shopping and the I-29 and I-229 interchanges are often just 5 to 10 minutes from much of town, which makes Harrisburg an easy base for commuting anywhere in the metro.

Home styles

Harrisburg is a new-construction town. You will find ranch and two-story homes from the 2000s and 2010s, plus active developments on the edges of town with villas, twin homes and single-family lots. Larger developments such as Allura (Artessa) and Lone Tree have added hundreds of acres of planned homes. If you are building, I help you compare builders, floor plans and lots, and my architectural engineering background helps me spot layout and finish choices that hold their value at resale.

Parks and lifestyle

The city runs a compact but busy park system:

  • Central Park: ball fields, a championship baseball field and a 9-hole disc golf course, home to the Harrisburg Days summer festival.
  • Lake Ole: shore fishing, an accessible pier and a half-mile paved trail, right across from Central Park.
  • Lions Park: an all-ages playground with a sensory wall in the Legendary Estates addition.
  • Rover Range: the town's dog park.
  • Grand Gardens: 44 community garden plots.

Just outside town, Lake Alvin Recreation Area adds a beach, fishing and trails. The Harrisburg Community Library is on East Willow Street.

Who Harrisburg fits

Harrisburg suits buyers who want a newer home, a growing school district and quick access to south Sioux Falls, especially families moving up or building their first custom home.
